Designing a high-speed train station in the south of France Pablo Sepulveda, AECOM

Pablo will present on the key design challenges associated with designing a new high-speed train station in Montpelier, France. He will discuss how parametric studies in Grasshopper assisted with the design of the perforated fibre-reinforced concrete roof to minimise solar gains while preserving access to daylight. And he will talk about designing a thermal comfort system to keep indoor temperature below 26 C without air conditioning. With Masters level qualifications in Architecture and Town Planning and nine years working experience in France, Pablo is in a unique position to bridge architectural and engineering cultures. His particular areas of interest include: parametric modelling, vernacular inspired architecture, biomimicry, ‘cradle to cradle’ and ‘design for disassembly’ design.

Applying Passive House design standards in non-standard ways Nick Mulvany, Umow Lai

The Passive House design standard is seeing exponential growth within Australia for both residential and non-residential building types. The Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) is a meticulously designed Excel-based analysis tool to assess performance to the Passive House standard. Nick will discuss recent experiences in the application and use of the PHPP and supporting tools ‘DesignPH’ and THERM, as used in the design of high-end residential project. Nick is an Associate within Umow Lai’s specialist Sustainability division and a certified Passive House Consultant. He has solid technical foundations in mechanical & HVAC engineering, sustainable building principles & technologies, rating & benchmarking systems, advanced analysis tools and regulatory compliance requirements.
