Job Opportunity in Canberra, Australia

Exergy Australia is seeking a building simulation specialist to join its team in Canberra to conduct simulation work across a wide range of high profile projects.

Exergy Australia is one of Australia’s leading energy efficiency consultancies. We specialise in commercial/institutional energy efficiency and work extensively on both new and existing buildings. Our Canberra based team is highly specialised, with internationally recognised skills in energy efficiency. Exergy has a friendly collegial office culture in which everyone is keenly motivated to learn and to create better, more environmentally friendly and energy efficient buildings.

We are dedicated to promoting simulation as a key part of the design or refurbishment process so that it becomes an analysis tool used from concept development to operational building. Thermal modelling results are carefully examined from a practical viewpoint and integrated with lighting and acoustic simulations to provide a rigorous scientific understanding of expected building performance.

Due to expanding workload and changes in software we are looking for a simulation specialist with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in using TAS. In line with company policy, the successful applicant will be provided with broad-based training in all aspects of company work, including site-work, energy auditing and broader ESD consulting.

Correspondingly, the successful applicant will be expected to assist in the development of training and support materials for other staff working with simulations.

An attractive salary package including relocation costs if required will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Applicants should provide a copy of their CV and brief responses to the following selection criteria by 14 March 2008:
• Experience in using the TAS building simulation package
• Experience in building simulation generally
• Understanding of HVAC systems
• Broader experience in the commercial buildings sector

Applications should be sent to: Paul Bannister, Managing Director, Exergy Australia, PO Box 546 Belconnen ACT 2616, email: paul@xgl.com.au. Ph: 02 6257 7066.

IBPSA Australasia Board

Dear IBPSA Australasia Members

It is my pleasure to announce that the nominees for the new IBPSA
Australasia Board have received full support, and therefore the new
IBPSA Australasia Board is as follows:

President: Paul Bannister, Exergy Australia (paul@xgl.com.au)
Vice President: PC Thomas, Team Catalyst(pc.thomas@teamcatalyst.com.au)
Membership/Web Site Coordinator: Quentin Jackson, eCubed Building
Workshop (quentin@e3bw.co.nz)
Immediate Past President: Veronica Soebarto

We don't have nomination for the Secretary/Treasurer, and I would be
happy to serve that role at least until we have a new secretary/treasurer.

I apologise for the delay in announcing this, and for lack of
communication, information and activities in the past 11 months. I
guess after organising the first IBPSA Australasia double-refereed
last year I felt so exhausted, plus I was then swamped by the regular
teaching, research and other admin tasks at the University.

I believe under the new leadership of Paul Bannister and PC Thomas
IBPSA Australasia will be more active, and will play an important role
in industry, and linking research with practice.

Congratulations to the new President and Vice President. I would also
like to thank Quentin Jackson for his support and continuing
commitment in maintaining the IBPSA Australasia web site.

Best regards
Veronica Soebarto

IBPSA Australasia 2006 Conference

'Investigating the roles and challenges of building performance
simulation in achieving a sustainable built environment'

20-21 November 2006
The University of Adelaide
Adelaide, South Australia

IBPSA Australasia is an affiliate of IBPSA Central (website), a non-profit international society of building performance simulation researchers, developers and practitioners. IBPSA was founded to advance and promote the science of building performance simulation in order to improve the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of new and existing buildings worldwide. IBPSA aims to provide a forum for researchers, developers and practitioners to review building model developments, facilitate evaluation, encourage the use of software programs, address standardization, accelerate integration and technology transfer.

In the last thirty years the practice of building performance simulation has played an important role in the building industry. This includes the use of simulation in the design process of new buildings including the building heating, cooling and ventilation systems, lighting and daylighting, noise control and the building acoustics. Simulation can help to minimize the operating costs of new buildings as the performance of the buildings can be predicted before construction commences. Simulation is also used in assessing the performance of existing buildings and investigating energy saving measures. Toward the end of the last century, simulation has also been used in evaluating the compliance to standards and codes for new buildings.

The IBPSA 2006 conference invites researchers, academics, and practitioners to participate and present their work in addressing the conference theme.

It is expected that the conference will provide useful outcomes to government bodies, industry and practitioners, such as building regulators and code officials in developing building codes and standards; city planners in assessing planning development using building performance simulation; engineers, building architects and designers in improving the design of the built environment; and researchers in understanding the complex issues surrounding people and the built environment.
